Applying Technology

Grade 8

Required Course
for all 8th graders

5 Periods/Week/Quarter

Your second year of Technology Education will be in the materials lab. Through hands-on activities, work sheets, class discussions and out of class work you will continue to learn about Communication, Transportation and Production Technology and how it affects you, your family, and your surroundings. You will learn how to safely and properly operate hand tools, power tools and machines.

You will design (with specific tolerances in metric), build, and race a CO2 powered race car. Each student will keep the car. You will be working alone and working as a group as you learn about technology. Your creativity and problem solving skills will be used throughout the entire class. Each student will need a spray can of primer (fast dry, gray, sandable) and spray can of finish paint (compatible to the primer), as well as a plastic or cardboard shoe box (to store a 305 mm/12 inch long CO2 car and parts) by the third week of the class or earlier. A CO2 car championship race (Spartan 500) will take place at the end of the year (May 2010) with the top two CO2 cars qualifying from each of the eight quarter classes (Spartan 125's).

For our class to be educational, exciting, interesting, and fun, you will have to be sure you are prepared for class and participate in discussions and activities. You will try your best and produce assignments (design briefs) of superior quality and complete all assignments on time. You need to treat others with respect as well as the equipment in class. Safety is a big concern and you will have to follow all safety rules (ex. wear safety glasses and closed toed shoes only) while in class. You will be required to abide by all of the schools rules and have your agenda book, class work, and ID with you at all times.

Grading for this course is as follows:
Projects, worksheets, homework, and tests, comprise the total class points (points are based on difficulty and length of time to complete the assignment) students can earn for a class grade. Students who are absent and need to make up work, can do so after school by making arrangements with Mr. Farrara or Mr. Siggins (period 9, 2:15 to 3:00).
