8th Grade Applying Technology - Design Briefs

Technology Videos
Students will watch and discuss a variety of technology videos involving transportation, production (manufacturing and construction), and communication.

Wooden Letter
Pencil Holder
The student will design and construct a Wooden Letter Pencil Holder. The letter can be hand drawn (4") or computer typed (about 400 pt size). The letter will be assembled to a wooden base using one or two screws. A pencil holder can made with wood and straw and can be added to compliment the project.
Additional letters or a complete name can be made for this project. Samples: • M

Step by Step
CO2 Race Car

A step by step procedure sheet to construct the CO2 Race Car from drawing thumbnails to the Spartan 500 time trials and qualifiers. Poster size when printed is 11" x 23" on 3 sheets of paper.

Thumbnails

Students will draw a variety of thumbnail designs for their CO2 race car. Draw 10 sides and 10 top views in pencil. Sample thumbnail designs • 1234

Rough Sketch

Students will draw their favorite side and top thumbnail designs in half scale on the rough sketch paper. See Mr. Farrara or Mr. Siggins for a copy of this sheet.

Full Scale Drawing

Students will draw their full scale drawing by doubling the rough sketch measurements. Refer to the R&D sheet to make sure your finished car design is drawn to legal tolerances.
See Mr. Farrara or Mr. Siggins for a copy of this sheet.

R & D

Design Brief - Research & Design sheet for building the CO2 race car. Included are specific tolerances (minimum and maximum) for building the car, from axle lengths to car weight.

Inside Wheels or Fenders
Steps to mortise out your car for inside wheels or drilling fenders.

Paint a Car Two-Tone
Steps to paint your car in multi colors.

Calculating Sheet

This sheet is used to help calculate the weight of the wood blank for the CO2 race car to make it very competitive. Refer to the step by step procedure sheet when to use this sheet.

Time Trial Blank

This sheet is to help set up the classes for time trials.

Spartan 125

Spartan 500

Sheets for bracketing students and their race cars: The #1 car races #16, #2 races #15, #3 races #14, etc. Similar to the bracket used for the March Madness in NCAA Basketball. Spartan 125's are for each of the quarter classes (2 qualify in each quarter class/8 classes a year) and the Spartan 500 is the end of the year race for the 16 qualifiers. Every 8th grader attends the Spartan 500, held in the gym in late May or early June of each year.

Paper Tower
Students will build a tower as tall as possible with only a piece of paper, 8-1/2" x 11" and 12" of masking tape. This will take place in one class period.

Name Advertisement
Students will create a 3D name ad with one piece of 8-1/2" x 11" cover stock paper.

Bottle Rocket
Students will make and launch a bottle rocket out of a student supplied #1 PETE soda bottle. Using a home made Hypsometer, the student will determine the distance the bottle rocket travels.

Straw Tower
Students will build a tower using straws and pins to hold as much weight as possible before collapsing.

Alice
Students will learn how to use Alice. Alice is an innovative, free, 3D programming environment that makes it easy to create an animation for telling a story, playing an interactive game, or a video to share on the web.
