7th Grade Applying Technology - Design Briefs


Technology Videos
  Students will watch and discuss a variety of technology videos/DVD's involving transportation, production (manufacturing and construction), and communication and how they affect their surroundings.
     
Tests/Quizzes
  Students will take tests and quizzes to determine what they have learned and retained about the families of technology. Technology Handout. Technology Family lists • Q3P2Q3P3

• Transportation/Production Technology • Interstate Highway System - 1956 - created by President Eisenhower. There are 46,000 plus miles of Interstate Highways in the United States. Watch Modern Marvels (44 minutes) - Super Highways.

• Communication Technology • Watch Modern Marvels (44 minutes) - Retro Tech.
     

Mac OSX Operation

 

Students will learn the basics of the Mac OSX operating system along with many keyboard shortcuts to speed up computer operations. These will be used in many class projects.

Applications
  Students will learn to use a variety of applications such as GarageBand, iTunes, iMovie, Photo Booth, Pages, Keynote, QuickTime,Photoshop, and more.
     
Digital Camera/Scanner
 

Students will learn how to use a digital camera and scanner for a variety of class projects. Students will learn the basics of composition and the rule of thirds and how to download from the camera.

     
Animation Video
  Students will use 4 iLife apps: iPhoto, GarageBand, iTunes, & iMovie to create an Animation Video. The finished video (shared as a QuickTime video), will have a title, group photo, animation, group photo, credits and a sound track. How to create the iMovie Animation. How to Export and submit your animation video.
     

"All About Me"
Video

  •••Students will create an "All About Me" video (20 or more total still images) using Photo Booth, Internet photos, Digital Camera stills, Scanned Photos (students need at least 5 photos to be scanned) and at least one video clip (using the Flip cameras - How to "Import from a Flip camera") and a credit slide. The photos can be of family, friends, sports, hobbies, pets, cars, etc. that reflect you. The photos will be saved in iPhoto and then edited using iMovie 11 with the Ken Burns effect. Music (clean, PG) must be used and can be from home, CD, GarageBand and/or Jingles. The finished video should be about 1 to 3 minutes long.

JHS Commercial
  Students will create 15-30 second JHS commercials (Flip cameras). The commercials should promote JHS Student Council future activities. Students will need to storyboard their ideas and get permission from Mr. Farrara before shooting their commercial. No shot that is used, can be longer than 4 seconds. Shoot each shot more than once so you have many to choose from.
     
Race Car Body Design

Cardboard Race Car
  • Students will design their race car body design as a pattern development. This is similar to how packages are put together using the tab method.

• Students will build a Cardboard Race Car from cardboard, matboard, dowel rods, straws, hot glue, tape, a hole punch, a cordless drill, and more. Race Car Points explanation sheet.
     
Green Screen Project
 
Students will take a photo in front of the green screen and key out the green in Photoshop. They will place the student (or themselves) in front of another photo from the web or their own photo.
     

Inventor-Invention Podcast
Help Questions

Check List

 
• Students will create a 30 to 60 second podcast about one of their favorite inventors or inventions.
• Use the
Help Questions pdf, (from when we did PowerPoint projects) to search for answers and look at the Check List before submitting the Podcast.
• Using Word or Pages, and using the help questions, type your invention script.

• You can find information on a variety of inventions at inventors.about.com. or Google search for information.
• You will record your script followed by adding photos to match your information.

• Watch the GarageBand Invention tutorials for help in creating your podcast and look at the Check List before submitting your podcast. Watch the "How to Submit" your Podcast when all is good with your podcast.

News of 2011/2012
 

Students wil investigate news stories from 2011 and 2012, write a script (about 30-60 seconds total), and report on it. Students will record it in the Wyo5Live studio or outside the classroom. Classmates will the Flip cameras for this project. Use the 2011-12 blank script found in the Groups-Exploring Tech-Hand Out folder.

     
Alice
  If time permits, students will learn how to use Alice. Alice is an innovative, free (from Carnegie-Mellon University), 3D programming environment that makes it easy to create an animation for telling a story, playing an interactive game, or a video to share on the web.
