Student Interview
Storyboard

w/LiveType Title and
Lower Third Title
This is a three student group project. After learning the camcorder basics, each student will interview a classmate, be interviewed by a classmate, and record an interview. The student will follow the premade storyboard with various professional style camera shots. An 8 shot storyboard will be used. The student has the choice of using the questions on the storyboard or creating their own (discretion should be used). Seniors in MM2 can ask senior related questions to do their interview. The student who videotapes the interview will be the director and edit the video they shot. Rubric.

The student will also add a lower third title using LiveType for this project and also a title at the beginning of the video. You must use a tripod for this assignment.
Watch the LiveType tutorials on creating lower third titles - Tutorial 1 - Tutorial 2

Basic Camera Shots
The student, with a student partner, will record (with a tripod, monopod, or steady cam) 3 pans, 3 tilts, 3 zooms, and 3 dolly shots. When all shooting is complete, the other student will do the same assignment using their own tape. The none shooting student partner should be in the shots. Use manual focus and white balance your camera. You will edit these in Final Cut Pro with titles, a dissolve transition (tutorial) (you may use any transition) between shots, and add a soundtrack created in GarageBand. A two second slug should be added at the beginning of each of the four sequences.

This will be handed in as 4 separate QuickTime files - Pans, Tilts, Zooms, and Dolly Shots. Rubric.
Applications used: Final Cut Pro, GarageBand, LIve Type, and iTunes.

Digital Photo
Slide Show

The student will use at least 25 digital stills or scanned photos and create a still photo montage. The photos can be of family, friends, sports, hobbies, pets, cars, etc. The photos will be imported into Final Cut Pro and a personal slideshow will be created using your favorite song, GarageBand music, or a personal narrative original written story. This project can be used to introduce and reinforce the power of writing. Audio can be recorded using the microphone on your video camera and then separated from the video in Log and Capture or recorded directly to FCP. Keyframing and animating of the photos will be used heavily in this project.

Applications used: Final Cut Pro, GarageBand, iTunes, Image Capture, Photoshop, and QuickTime.
Watch these 2 informative tutorials to help you in creating your slide show. Slide Show Tutorial 1 - Tutorial 2

To get an idea on using stills in a FCP project from a business, go to www.seminars/apple.com and watch Creating a Rich Media Podcast with Final Cut Pro with Rich Storm, under the Photo section. Both free seminars give great info using still photography in a video editing program.

2009-10
Highlight
Sports Videos

The student will record footage of a fall and winter sport. Shoot various wide, medium, and close up shots of players, crowd reaction shots, fans watching the game, score board (this helps tell where you are in the game-beginning, halftime, last minutes) coaches, trainers, officials, the ball, etc. One edited sport video is due by the end of each quarter. The student will edit a fast paced one minute or more highlight video with student created GarageBand/Soundtrack music or your own music. Remember the 180º rule to prevent crossing the line. Rubric. These videos will be shown on Wyo5Live and may also be included in the 2010 senior video package.

Focus
White Balance
Shutter Speeds

Practice Videos
  • The student will use manual focus (zoom in focus, zoom out, compose your shot) to focus on different subjects and demonstrate a rack focus shot.
• The s
tudent will record various shots in different kinds of light from: a candle, incandescent bulb, fluorescent lights, and natural light (cloudy and sunny). The student will record and take notes in auto white balance mode, preset white balance mode, and manual white balance.
• The student will record a person running with various shutter speed settings while giving an audio cue as to the speed used during recording. We will then look at a still frame shot of each setting.
• These will be edited in FCP and all shots will be labeled with a title and description.

VideoMaker
Storyboards

1. The Chase 2. Late for a Date 3. Mad Scientist 4. Treasure Hunt

The student or students will produce a video selected from one of the four pre-made storyboards from VideoMaker Magazine (2002). The videos are written for the student to create their own ending. This is an individual/group project. Every student in the group will edit their own video (each video will look similar, except for the ending) with their own unique ending. Every student must be a cameraperson
for the video at some point during the movie. Please use the basic camera shots (be creative) and a tripod when necessary. You can deviate from the stroyboard a little. A creative title and credits should be added as well a soundtrack made in GarageBand or Soundtrack. Sound effects (FX) can also be added, using Soundtrack, to enhance the overall feel of the video. Rubric. If you have another movie idea, with a storyboard, you may shoot it, provided it's approved by Mr. Farrara.

67th AAA
Traffic Safety
Senior High
Audio Visual Contest
  • The Message: "Safe Teen Driving"Due date: End of the 2nd quarter in January, 2011.
• This might not be offered by AAA in 2011.
• The PSA (Public Service Announcement) message should caution drivers to avoid the many dangers facing teen drivers today.
Alcohol Awareness, Distracted Driving, Aggressive Driving/Speeding, Safety Belt Use/Buckle Up
All students in MM3 (individual or group project) are to produce a 1 to 2 minute PSA. It must have a Title Page with the student's name, school, and name of the PSA. Originality, creaivity, and the submission criteria above must apply.
• This exciting educational program plants the seed of essential traffic safety concepts in the minds of emerging new drivers. The process motivates participants to adopt safer behaviors in their own lives and presents them with a chance to win Visa Gift Checks.
• View previous AAA videos. Entries must be submitted on DVD.

Forced Perspective
Students will create a forced perspective video. Watch a sample video from another school.

SPARTAN
300

This is a unique video in that the student must make a video with a beginning, a middle and an end. Nothing out of the ordinary, except that it must only be 300 frames long, no more, no less. There are 30 frames in a second of video, so the video can only be 10 seconds long. Creative shots are needed to make this work. Good luck. Watch some of the past videos.

Clone
A video where you work with yourself. You play your twin, yes your twin or even more of you. We're looking forward to your creativity. Watch Tutorial. This tutorial explains how to clone yourself using a tripod, creative planning, shooting, and editing in FCP with the crop tool. An example of what can be done is included at the end of the tutorial.

4 MInutes
Between Class
Students can create a humorous video showing all the things (unrealistic, of course, but with the power of editing you can do the impossible) that can be done in the 4 minutes between the passing of class. A storyboard or script is needed before shooting can begin. Here are 2 sample videos to watch from 1997 and 2000.

SoundFX

Students create their own unique sound effects (minimum of 5) to use on their video projects, share with classmates, or others for their videos. These will be edited in FCP and exported as 5 AIFF audio files.

Wyo5Live
Animated Logo
The student will create a new Wyo5Live animated logo using LiveType and GarageBand. The new logo should be about 5-10 seconds in length. Each students logo will be shown on the Wyo5Live show right after the pledge to the flag and before the announcers intro.

MasterCard
"Priceless"

One of my favorites. Students create, storyboard, video, and edit a 30 second commercial (plus/minus 3 frames) just like the real ones you've see on TV. Students will also create the MasterCard logo at the end of the commercial using Photoshop, FCP, LiveType, After Effects, or other programs.
